CHEMICAL ENGINEERING  is a branch of engineering that uses principles of chemistry, physics, mathematics, biology, and economics to efficiently use, produce, design, transport and transform energy and materials. The work of chemical engineers can range from the utilisation of nano-technology and nano-materials in the laboratory to large-scale industrial processes that convert chemicals, raw materials, living cells, microorganisms, and energy into useful forms and products. Chemical engineers are involved in many aspects of plant design and operation, including safety and hazard assessments, process design and analysis, modeling, control engineering, chemical reaction engineering, nuclear engineering, biological engineering, construction specification, and operating instructions. Chemical engineers typically hold a degree in Chemical Engineering or Process Engineering. Practising engineers may have professional certification and be accredited members of a professional body.

Virtual Lab of Chemical Process Dynamics

 Overview

Virtual Labs project is an initiative of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India under the aegis of National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). This project is a consortium activity of twelve participating institutes and IIT Delhi is coordinating institute. It is a paradigm shift in ICT-based education. For the first time, such an initiative has been taken-up in remote‐experimentation. Under Virtual Labs project, over 100 Virtual Labs consisting of approximately 700+ web-enabled experiments were designed for remote-operation and viewing. The intended beneficiaries of the projects are:

  • All students and Faculty Members of Science and Engineering Colleges who do not have access to good lab‐facilities and/or instruments.
  • High‐school students, whose inquisitiveness will be triggered, possibly motivating them to take up higher‐studies. Researchers in different institutes who can collaborate and share resources.
  • Different engineering colleges who can benefit from the content and related teaching resources.

Virtual Labs do not require any additional infrastructural setup for conducting experiments at user premises. The simulations-based experiments can be accessed remotely via internet.

IIT Kharagpur has developed a few software modules for conducting laboratory experiments virtually. The modules aim to provide a learning experience, similar to the hands on one in a real laboratory, through use of computer simulator and graphic tools. The modules are to be run through internet, and are primarily intended for a wider audience, beyond classroom. The modules cover the dynamics of process variables in traditional systems (e.g., heat exchanger, reactor), and recent methods (e.g., membrane separation, bioreactor)

Indian Institute of Chemical Engineering Online Internship Programme

Dear Students,

Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IIChE) has taken an initiative to provide online summer training (4 weeks) to the UG students of Chemical Engineering and/or allied discipline under this prevailing crisis lock down period due to Covid-19 Pandemic. The academic calendar for the present semester is uncertain and it is very difficult for the students to do on-site summer internship in this critical situation. Therefore, AICTE advised to student for online summer training as an alternative option.

In view of this, IIChE is going to provide online summer training on various topics related to the chemical engineering curriculum including process safety management, petroleum refinery, petrochemicals, energy audit, and chemical process technology, zero discharge liquid management, 6-sigma training, and biochemical process plant.

The online training will be provided by the eminent experts from the different esteemed industry and/or academia. Moreover, the organizational members of the institute (https://www.iiche.org.in/pdfs/IIChEOrg_Memb.pdf ) would also take part in this training program. Around 55 industry and 42 institute/university are empaneled as an organizational members of IIChE. The eminent experts from its organizational members will be engaged to provide the online summer training. The mode of online training will be compromised with webinar discussion, assignment, problem solving, report writing, and evaluation. A certificate will be provided after successful completion of the online training.

Online training program schedule and the registration fees are mentioned here below:
